Lighthouse Route
Introduction
Our route forms part of the Pilgrimage of Hope routes. Our ethos and principles are therefore deeply rooted in the idea of a journey that is external and internal – a journey where you can experience more physical exercise, emotional relaxation, and interaction with people and communities, nature and culture. It can also become a deep spiritual journey in which you find that God is travelling with you.
The route runs through two districts, namely the Garden Route and the Overberg, which include the municipalities of Mossel Bay, Hessequa, Swellendam and Bredasdorp. The route along the coast is slightly more difficult but makes up for it with breathtaking views. Day 8-11 takes you inland, a bit of Duineveld, but with beautiful farms with crops and livestock. On Day 12-17 in the Overberg you walk past the Potberg with its cliff vultures, and then of course through the “breadbasket” of SA with its wheat and canola fields. We take pilgrims away from the dirt roads, through fields, back farm paths, and over river streams – you will be amazed by the beauty! You will end your journey at Struisbaai, first on the beach and then to Agulgas.
Our lodgings/inns, which are about 15-29 km apart, offer a wide variety – from farmhouses, and workers’ cottages, to lodges. However, the hospitality of the innkeepers really makes you feel at home!

There are 16 overnight places or inns that hospitably offer a bed, bed linen, towel, dinner and packed lunch for the next day. Especially the first 7 days’ inns can only be reached by detours.
