Via Baviaans Route

The Baviaans Calls! Trailblazers of the Pilgrimage of Hope ‘Tests’ a New Route in the Eastern Cape this October

Some people walk a route of the Pilgrimage of Hope as a way of closing a “season” in their lives. Others do it to “let go” of something.

That’s how Dr Frederick Marais explained it while walking the route four years ago. “A pilgrimage is a different kind of walk — an inner journey … and some people find hope again,” Marais said at the time, along the path where the popular Garden Route Pilgrimage had just been launched.

Now, this energetic theologian is once again part of a small group of adventurers who are testing the next “leg” of the network of walking routes this October.

This  pilgrimage will begin at Jeffreys Bay on the Eastern Cape coast. Then it passes through the rugged Baviaanskloof, and ends 11 days and more than 200 km later at Uniondale in the Little Karoo.

Each night, the walkers will experience the warm hospitality of local guesthouses and meet local people — a cherished hallmark of the Pilgrimage of Hope routes.

Marais established this  pilgrimage initiative on African soil in 2014 after completing the Camino in Spain. And, as before, Kerkbode, the newspaper of the Dutch Reformed Church will join them to experience it firsthand and share the journey with readers and future pilgrims.
